‘Als je je eenmaal realiseert hoe goed je reuk en gehoor zijn — wij moderne mensen hebben geen idee hoe goed zij zijn en wat ze voor ons kunnen doen. Er is een totaal akoestisch en olifactorisch universum daar buiten waar we ons compleet voor afsluiten. Ik denk dat het komt door alle lawaai. Ik denk ook gaat hij verder dat dat het meest in de buurt komt van wat ik zie als je meest innerlijke menselijkeid omdat dat is hoe we evolueerden, al luisterend en ruikend op manieren die tegenwoordig niet meer zijn voor te stellen. We zijn dezelfde soort. De menselijke geest, onze intelligentie, ons bewustzijn, ze zijn allemaal geëvolueerd in een leefomgeving waarvan we de overblijfselen de wildernis noemen. De kwestie die ik voortdurend aankaart is deze; we evolueerden in wat een wilde leefomgeving is door het gebruik onze zintuigen om dat te laten voortleven heb je de condities nodig waarin die zintuigen zijn geëvolueerd.Dat is een sterk argument voor stilte.

… Once you realize how good your senses of smell and hearing are—we modern people have no notion of how good they are and what they can do for us. There ’s a total acoustic and olfactory universe out there that we totally shut down to. We are the same species. The human mind, our intelligence, our consciousness, it all evolved from a habitat, whose remnants here in this country we call wilderness. The issue I’m continually raising is this; we evolved from that, which is essentially a wilderness, a wild habitat, using our senses, and that which evolves doesn’t persist without sustaining the conditions of its creation. That’s a giant argument fot silence right here….
